Swindon avoid FA Cup first-round upset at Eastleigh

Michael Doughty's penalty spared Swindon's blushes as they avoided an FA Cup first-round upset with a 1-1 draw at Eastleigh.

Mikael Mandron's 64th-minute header from a Jake Howells free-kick had looked like securing the National League club's progress, in an even game despite there being two leagues between the sides

But on-loan QPR midfielder Doughty slotted his spot-kick five minutes later, after being fouled by home keeper Ryan Clarke, to take the tie back to the County Ground.

Ronnie Moore's non-leaguers had started the game the stronger with James Constable denied by Lawrence Vigouroux's bravery.

Swindon came into the game with Luke Norris' effort from the edge of the area brilliantly saved by Clarke.

The visitors were unfortunate not to take the lead when Doughty hit the crossbar and Norris' powerful header was majestically saved by Clarke

TV replays suggested, however, that the ball had crossed the line.

The game appeared to be heading towards a goalless draw until Mandron delighted the home fans with the opener.

But Swindon, who have not won an FA Cup match since 2012, quickly levelled to keep themselves in the competition, although Eastleigh came closer to winning the match in injury time as substitute Ayo Obileye was denied on the line.
