Gurney and Heywood apologise for Tuesday Night

Both Gurney and Heywood, upon hearing certain things said to them by a small section of the away support, reacted unprofessionally and today had this to say:

Andy Gurney commented, "During the second half of Tuesday evening’s match against Cheltenham Town I was involved in an incident with a small section of our own supporters. The way that I reacted was totally wrong and I just hope that the supporters can realise that we are as frustrated as they are about our recent run of defeats. That said, it doesn’t excuse my actions and I would like to offer my sincerest apologies.

"We are all trying hard to turn things around and sometimes when a certain situation is going against you, it is very easy to react in the heat of the moment."

Matthew Heywood added, "I just got caught up in the moment after some nasty comments were directed towards Andy (Gurney. I know I shouldn’t have reacted in the way that I did, but at the time we were as frustrated as the fans were. I know I can not excuse the way I acted and so I apologise to anyone that may have been offended."

Town manager, Andy King, probably had to endure the worst of the criticism on the evening and yet whilst he is as frustrated as anyone by the defeat, he says that it does not excuse his players from reacting the way they did. He said, "Andy Gurney’s passion and frustration at losing games came out that night, but not in an acceptable way. The fans are entitled to their opinion and no matter how frustrated you are; you cannot react like that. As for Matty, it’s not in his nature to do anything like that and whilst I am not defending his behaviour, it is not a situation that he has had to deal with before.
