Gurney first joined Swindon in 2001, playing 143 times and scoring 24 goals before leaving to join Swansea city in 2004, then a year later he rejoined Swindon playing another 27 games last season.

Gurney who is only 32 suffered an ankle injury last season, and has never fully recovered from this problem meaning he wasn't able to play at all this season.

Manager Paul Sturrock said: "I am disappointed for the boy because he has been an honest, hardworking player with a great free-kick on him. We were hoping that his versatility could have benefited us but football seems to kick you in the teeth."
