1,338 Swindon fans made the 70 mile trip to Northampton for the opening game.

Northampton took the lead after 9 minutes after a close range header by Andy Kirk.

Swindon were awarded a penalty shortly before half time when Colin Larkin handled the ball in the box. The referee didn't give the penalty, but the linesman did. Christian Roberts took the kick and sent the 'keeper the wrong way to make it 1-1 after 43 minutes.

Just after half time Swindon should have taken the lead when a Christian Roberts shot beat the 'keeper but hit the post before going out of play.

Phil Smith also had to make some good saves to keep Swindon in the game, and at one time it looked like Northampton would score again, but the ball hit Smith's legs and stayed out. Northampton also came close when an overhead kick hit the bar.

The game ended 1-1 which was a fair result for both sides. Swindon now have a break from league action on Tuesday evening when they are at home to Charlton in the first round of the Carling League Cup.
