Nottingham Forest 7 Swindon 1
Last updated : 26 February 2006 By Tim
Nearly 1,200 Swindon fans made the trip to the City Ground, which was watched by Nottingham Forest's third biggest crowd of the season at 22,444.
Swindon started badly, and it just got worse during the game. Nottingham Forest took the lead on 3 minutes when Julian Bennett's shot hit the bar and rebounded out to Nicky Southall who scored from 20 yards out with a good shot that beat Evans.
Swindon nearly equalised on 8 minutes when a cross from Shakes found Lee Peacock who hit the bar, and the ball bounced down and was cleared away and didn't cross the line.
Then on 17 minutes Forest hit the bar again, and the ball then went out for a corner, and Wes Morgan scored after being left unmarked in the box to make it 2-0 to Forest and to just about rule out any chance of a Swindon come back.
Forest also had a penalty appeal turned down, and instead were given a free kick just on the edge of the box. They had 2 or 3 free kicks in goal scoring spots in the first half, but didn't score from these.
On 29 minutes Forest went 3-0 after another corner who poor defending lead to Ian Breckin heading in from close range.
Evans was forced to make another couple of good saves to keep the score down with forest going into the half time break leading only 3-0 when they could have been at least 5-0 up, or maybe 5-1 as Peacock's shot was Swindon's only first half chance.
The second half was even worse for Swindon with Grant Holt missing from close range on 46 minutes, but Forest did make it 4-0 a few minutes later on 51 minutes when Southall scored from close range after being left unmarked. He even took his time in scoring and waited a few seconds but still was allowed to score.
At this point some Swindon fans left, but most said and carried on signing, and taking part in the Mexican Wave which went around the Stadium a few times. At the point if it just a question of how many Forest would score.
By 55 minutes it was 5-0 when Southall completed his hat trick from another corner where again he was left unmarked. At first the ball was cleared away but it soon was crossed for Southall.
Then on 57 minutes it was 6-0 when Wes Morgan was also left unmarked to head in from close range.
Andy Gurney and Trevor Benjamin come on as subs after 60 minutes replacing Aaron Brown and Albert Jarrett.
On 66 minutes Jerel Ifil was sent off for a second yellow card after a foul just outside the box on Grant Hunt.
On 76 minutes it looked like Forest had scored a 7th goal, but this was disallowed for a push on Evans, and the Forest fans and players didn't appeal too much.
Forest gifted Swindon a goal on 76 minutes which they wouldn't have done if the score was still fairly close. Benjamin headed in from close range after a Gurney free kick, and the Forest 'keeper didn't even attempt a save to make it 6-1 but there wasn't much chance of a 7-6 Swindon win.
Swindon could have got a second a few minutes later, but this time the shot was saved.
Then Forest made it 7 in the final minute after more poor Swindon defending after Jack Lester scored from close range, to end Swindon's day.
Overall a very poor display by Swindon who caught Forest playing one of their best games according to lots of the Forest fans. It could have been more than 10 goals in after 60 minutes Forest hadn't have sat back, and if Evans hadn't made at least 4 good saves. Swindon rarely looked like scoring, and only did because Forest let them.
The defeat moves Swindon back into the relegation zone in 22nd place ahead of Saturday's home game with Tranmere Rovers.
