Swindon had several early chances including having a goal cleared off the line, and Danny Invincibile also had a goal disallowed as the referee had already blown his whistle for a foul.
It was Swindon who had the much better first half and were unlucky to only be winning 1-0 at the break.
As the second half got under way it was Tranmere who had a lot more of the play with the defence kept busy.
Bart Griemink had the ball in his box when the referee stopped the play to book a Tranmere player up by the half way line, but instead of Griemink taking his kick again the referee gave Swindon a free kick 60 yards up the pitch much to the surprise of nearly everyone in the crowd.
Jones scored for Tranmere with just 10 minutes to go.
On loan Johnnie Jackson also came close late on for Swindon, but unlike Sam Parkin last week at Wycombe Swindon couldn't get a last minute winner.
Overall a 1-1 was a fair result, although Swindon were unlucky not to have scored 2 or 3 goals early on.
At the end of the game Jimmy Davis was given a good send off as it returns to Manchester United, and it has only got to be a matter of years, or even months before you will see him in an England shirt.
